Berkhampstead School is an independent school for approximately 220 girls and boys aged 3 to 11 situated in a beautiful part of Cheltenham. At its essence is the provision of a happy and caring environment for children, where they can excel.
Founded in 1945, the aim of the school was to provide a centre of educational excellence where children would be happy. This remains the case today. Pupils truly thrive and they mature into capable and confident young people, ready for the challenges of senior school and life beyond.
Berkhampstead pupils have extraordinary success in gaining Scholarships to Independent Senior Schools and entry to the excellent local Grammar Schools. We pride ourselves on fulfilling the individual potential of each pupil and prepare each for the school of their choice.

In a non-pressurised, yet purposeful environment pupils flourish academically and achieve very high standards in music, art, drama and sport.

Berkhampstead is a purposeful place crammed with opportunities where each pupil’s unique talents are celebrated. Our highly talented and dedicated staff encourage the individual to emerge, secure in his or her own abilities with a ‘can do’ attitude. There is a very broad curriculum and many pupils choose to attend the wide range of additional clubs and activities on offer.
A survey of Parents, Staff and Governors identified an aim of this school, valued above all others. Happiness - we want our children to be happy. We believe that because they are so happy, they work harder and take on the sort of attitude and confidence that will stand them in good stead in their senior schools.
Situated in three large buildings, in a leafy part of town, Berkhampstead prides itself on the following aims:
a family atmosphere with a Christian ethos
to develop the academic potential of each pupil
to encourage creativity with art, music and drama and to participate fully in a healthy sporting lifestyle
to promote happiness, self confidence and social skills

Development at the school is important and ongoing; recent years have seen the opening of a purpose-built gymnasium and classrooms for the younger pupils, along with a new art and music facility. As Headmaster I am excited about the future of the school, where the emphasis will continue to be on nurturing happiness and fulfilling potential.
