Chess Success

      Chess Success

This year’s Cheltenham District Chess Congress - which took place on Saturday - saw nearly one hundred children from eight schools competing for the Wheeler Cup. Berkhampstead had 13 keen chess players from years 3 - 6 playing the seven gruelling rounds of chess. We were delighted to not only win the Wheeler cup for highest scoring school, but individually we clinched joint second place and overall winner! Two of our younger boys also did well to come joint eighth place to share the top Year 3 prize. Our very own Martin Cole was one of the congress organisers and commented, ‘The tournament proved a great success and it was wonderful to see so many youngsters playing with such spirit and skill. The quality of the chess played was very high and some of the battles as the competition warmed up were completely riveting. All our Berky children did themselves justice and proved great ambassadors to the school.’ There will be a prize giving evening in the Summer term.
